Games Night & Tetris Dual

Our kids are just getting to the board game age, so we generally try to keep things simple when it comes to board games. Snakes & Ladders is a perennial favourite, but the latest one that's getting all the love in this house is Tetris Dual. It involves lots of creative spatial thinking to fit the odd-shaped pieces together, just like in the old arcade game we all know. It's a two player game with a simple electronic display to keep tally of points & whose turn it is.

The kids actually had a lot of fun playing with it in their own way, trying to stack all the pieces in the board, one at a time & fill it perfectly without any gaps.

Though I love the original video game version of Tetris, I prefer this one for my kids. They can play at their own speed & work on actual hand-eye-coordination & fine motor skills using their hands, rather than just clicking or tapping a screen. A bonus for my son is that the game pieces are his two favourite colours: orange & turquoise!

Tetris Dual is great for kids aged 6-10. It generally retails for around $30 in Canada.

If you're interested in finding out more about Tetris Dual, or some other fun board games to amp up your family games night, check out Kroeger Games Night! Kroeger will be hosting a Facebook party & GIVEAWAY on Friday, December 1 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm EST & they would love to have you participate! During the Kroeger Games Night & Facebook Party they will be answering questions, sharing fun facts, showing games night photos & more! So head over to like Kroeger's Facebook page & pop by Friday afternoon/evening for the party.

Rainy Spring Break? Come to Playdome!

After a long, cold, and snowier-than-usual winter here on the west coast, I was hoping for a nice, warm spring break. Well, we know how that turned out. Just a few days left of our school break, but we've got something really fun to do today: Playdome!

From the top of the ferris wheel in Playdome
Playdome is Western Canada’s largest indoor carnival, happening at BC Place from Wednesday, March 22 – Sunday, March 26, 2017. PlayDome features more than 45 rides and attractions, plus the usual guilty pleasure carnival snacks like mini doughnuts and cotton candy, plus games, all in one big warm, dry stadium.

I started going to Playdome with my students years ago when I taught ESL, and I've continued the tradition with my own kids in the last few years. We're pretty excited this year because both kids are now old enough and even three-year-old B is tall enough to go on many of the rides! (Check out the height restrictions for each ride here) No matter what the ages of your kids, if they like carnival rides, there's something for just about everybody at Playdome.

Playdome is open every day from 10:30am-9:00pm daily, except til 6:00pm on Sunday. Tickets are available at the door and online: $29 for a single-day Dome Pass; $49 for the 5-day Ultimate Pass, $8 for a Guest Pass (for parents or caregivers who don't want to go on the rides). Children under 2 years old admitted free (for safety reasons, they are not permitted to ride).

Find more information at bcplace.com/playdome or phone 604-669-2300.

If you want to share your experiences at Playdome, Follow BC Place on Facebook and tweet @BCPlace using the hashtag #PlayDome. Watch my Instagram feed for our adventures at Playdome this year: head over & follow Spokesmama there if you haven't already. :)

Disclaimer: our family received complimentary admission to Playdome as part of the media event.

Modo Family

Modo selfie! Easy to park the little Mazda2 for a family lunch
One of the reasons we choose to live in Canada's most expensive city is because, in the neighbourhood where we live, we don't need to drive. We have six frequent bus lines within a ten-minute walk of our house, many bike routes. Our cargo bike can carry more than some small cars can. However, we hardly need to bike to get groceries, go to the post office, community centres, cafes, or parks--we can easily walk to most things in less than 15 minutes.

Easter lunch with my family in Burnaby
But, our family--my two sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces & nephews, my & Oli's parents, our aunts, uncles, cousins--have for the most part chosen the more common suburban home & one car per adult lifestyle. They live in North & West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Mission, & the Okanagan.

It's a trade off: we pay much more for housing than they do, but then again, we save much more on transportation. I fwe lived somewhere more suburban, less dense, with less cycling infrastructure, outside the range of Modo (or any other carsharing organizations), we'd probably need to own two cars. which costs an average of $8000 per year in the Lower Mainland. The majority of our transportation is by bike, with the occasional transit fare thrown in. Our fleet of bikes cost under $200 a year to maintain--the bikes don't need much work & parts are so cheap. Modo bills & the occasional car rental fees are easy to track. We average less than $2000 a year on our driving.

Buckling up the kids to head out to Mission with Modo
So how do we keep in touch with all our far flung (well, far by transit or bike) relatives without owning a car? Modo.

There are at least a dozen Modo vehicles within a ten-minute walk of our home. & when I say vehicles, I mean compact cars, SUVs, minivans, pickup trucks, hybrids, sedans, even some new luxury cars like a Lexus & BMW have been added to the fleet recently. We can use whatever type of vehicle suits our purpose & only pay when we need it, which tends to be once or twice a month. Paying to maintain & insure a car that just sits there 28 days of the month just doesn't make sense.

My little city kids were excited to meet the neighbour's horse!
The last two times we used a Modo car were perfect examples of what I've been talking about: not sexy outings to gorgeous ski resorts or spontaneous road trips, but keeping connected with family. We drove to Burnaby to have a raucous lunch with my side of the family at a restaurant. The next day we made our way out to Mission to visit Oli's cousins & aunt for Easter dinner.

Disclaimer: As an Official Blogger Ambassador, Modo will be providing me with some driving credits & I'll be blogging, tweeting, Facebooking, & Instagramming about our adventures big & small with Modo. I've already been writing about carsharing for years, so if you've been following me for a while, expect more of the same!

Find Activities For Your Tot in Vancouver

"Sleeping" at the family drop in gym
Just the other day I was talking with Oliver about how frustrating it was to find the times of the family drop in gyms at community centres in this city. Going from one website to another & finding how exactly they've categorized it--parent & tot gym? family gym? preschool play time?--can be time consuming if you want to look for the schedules at a few different community centres. We typically use Hillcrest, Creekside, & Mount Pleasant, so I would go to three different websites to find a wear-Bronte-out-drop-in session.

Until I noticed a link in my Facebook feed to ONE page that amalgamates the baby, toddler, & preschooler drop-in program schedules for all the community centres in the City of Vancouver. When you look at the list, it only shows the names of the activities, not the location of each one, but if you click on them the details pop up without sending you to a further site. You can also filter the list by community centre, choosing one or more of your favourites.

Here's the link so you can easily find things for your rambunctious tot to do to burn off energy. If you haven't been to the comunity centre drop-in gyms yet, you should definitely go. They're very affordable--between $1.50 & $4 per kid, usually with a cheaper rate for two or more. Bronte loves to run around from kiddie car to little slide to foam mats to blocks to tunnel, etc & gets tons of good play time in there.
