Ten clues that tell you you're living in 2012

Sprout calls this a phone, but has never seen a real one like it.
This week's Listicles topic is a goodie: Ten clues that tell you you're living in 2012. (Thanks Anja for the topic!) After writing my list, I realized that nearly all of it focusses on computer technology. But that's one of the major differences in my life compared to the past. I'm part of the last generation that remembers a time when nobody had a computer at home & telephones plugged into the wall.
  1. The first thing I do in the morning, before getting out of bed, is to check Twitter & Gmail, usually Facebook too, from my smartphone.
  2. I haven't used an alarm clock for years, I'm woken by a rooster who lives inside my smartphone.
  3. My son pretends he's talking on a phone by holding things like a domino, cracker or SD card to his ear.
  4. I expect wifi at pretty much every single restaurant or cafe that I go to.
  5. I'd say 90% of my reading is done in an ereader app or on my netbook.
  6. I've met a significant number of friends & acquaintances online first.
  7. My toddler has a blog about him, rather than a baby book.
  8. I have sent text messages to my husband & chatted online while in the same house, sometimes the same room.
  9. Gas prices of $1.20/L seem like a good deal.
  10. The going rate for teenage babysitters is five times what it was when I started babysitting in the late 80s.

Why Monday lists? Reading the lovely Chloe's blog, Tea Swamp Park, I found an idea I had to 'steal': a list of all her Halloween costumes, with quite a few photos. She got the idea from Hula Seventy's List Project. I've decided to do the weekly lists for a year that Hula Seventy is doing.

Tea Swamp Park & Hula Seventy are not the only ones doing lists, however. Click on the Listicles badge to the left to check out NorthWestMommy's list & 'assignment' for next week.

Also, I made a new blog button.
What do you think?

  1. For starters, I noticed the new button right away. Very nice! I've been tinkering with ours, but it did not post well on Monday Listicles. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Your list is so spot on! I definitely expect WiFi wherever I go like it is a right. If you read our list, it is the antithesis of yours. We even have a PHONE BOOTH! :) Ellen

  2. I remember when our youngest now 8 -- as a toddler picked up a tiny calculator and held it to his ear. Now does anyone even have a calculator?

    1. I have one. But growing up I had an abacus ;)

  3. Yep, I could have all ten of those on my list too. When I was a toddler, we had a turn dial phone. And not because my grandparents liked vintage!
    Awesome list!!

  4. I text with my husband because otherwise we have to go into our bedroom, close and lock the door, then go into the closet and shut that door to have a private conversation. Our son is so nosy!!!

  5. Ha! #10 is my favorite! Seriously, I charged one dollar an hour! $1!!

  6. I love how your kid uses those small things as a phone - clearly those big old phones that we used are outdated (I used a rotary dial as a kid, for Pete's sake!) =)

  7. I don't know if it is progress or if it is sad that we text each other in the house.

  8. Growing up we had a phone booth in our house. It had a pay phone in it. Seriously! Remember the super super long phone cords that would reach around the doorway into the next room? They got SO tangled up from being stretched so much. Ha!

Irishman always texts me when he is in the bathroom. He's a goofball!

  9. The phone thing is so great! Did you ever proctor in the college dorms? There were no phones in the rooms and definitely no cell phones so someone monitored the main line and buzzed the rooms if calls came in. I love my cell phone! My list was mostly tech-based too!

  10. #8 is so true - it's the only way my husband and I can have a private conversation! We also just show each other our phones when we want the other person to read something (usually because it's inappropriate and funny) which has led to the baby stealing our phones and holding the screen up to people's faces while fake-laughing wildly. :)

  11. When I first got my license, gas was $.99 a gallon! Oh, the good ole days! Great list :)

  12. I can't remember the last time I picked up a book and read more than a sentence or two from it!

  13. I have a lot of the same ones... ahhh the good old days... or not... I still wonder how my parents got through an entire restaurant meal with no iphone apps for the kids!

  14. thank goodness for today's technology! :)

  15. Oh I babysat and thought I was rolling in dough making a buck an hour. My great nieces and nephews know how to operate a cell phone blindfolded. Blogging has been my outlet but I found it long after my boys were born..

  16. Excellent point about the blogging in lieu of baby books. It's so much easier, isn't it? I was thinking of creating a baby book for my son's 6th birthday--so he has some kind of keepsake. Of course all of his baby photos are online!

  17. WiFi -- so true. I can't (of course I can) live w/o it.

  18. My son uses a calculator as a phone. Its pretty accurate!

  19. The phone is so true. Theo identified that as a phone as soon as he had words and all we had in the house other than that were cells phones and cordless phones. Amazing icon.

  20. Oh I agree, technology pretty much runs my life these days. But I like it :)

  21. I'm the same when it comes to expecting wifi at restaurants and I get so upset when they don't have it!!! :)
