Tide Pods Review: an Update

After a few weeks of using Tide Pods, I've gotten used to the smell. Unfortunately, Sprout hasn't gotten used to the Tide Pods--he's had a mild rash on his torso & neck since we started using them. None in the diaper area, which makes sense as we're using a different laundry detergent for his diapers. If you've got a little one or have sensitive skin, you might want to skip the Tide Pods.

I'm not going to wash any more baby clothes, linens or towels in the Tide & I hope Sprout's rash will clear up. I prefer the unscented detergent we normally use & will go back to that when I've gotten through the pods.

Anyone else out there had a reaction to Tide Pods?

Here's my original review shortly after trying Tide Pods.

  1. Tide seems to be the main offender when it comes to rashes. Too bad, because it works pretty well!

    2. Just went to dermatologist on Monday after two weeks of awful, painful, itchy rash. He said it was "probably your dog." My dog is probably cleaner than he is. The only thing I did was change from liquid Tide Free and Gentle to Tide Pods Free and Gentle. Nothing "gentle" about it. I have trouble breathing at night while I am sleeping on the sheets washed with Pods. It is taking several washes to get the Pods out of everything: clothes, towels, sheets. Meanwhile on steriods, antihistamines and an antibiotic for the infection from the hives that I scratched to scabs. Pods should be removed from the market because they are a health hazard. Oh, yes, the clothes looked and smelled cleaner, but it nearly killed me.

    3. My family and I have always used Tide, I thought by switching to the Tide Pods it would be more cost-efficient and less mess for me to clean up! Boy was I wrong!!! We all broke out into a terrible rash and had to go to the doctor. Co-pays and steroid prescriptions aren't cheap! NO MORE PODS IN MY HOME!

  2. My daughter has also broken out in a rash since I switched to Tide Pods.

  5. Something told me to check and see if the Tide Pods have ever caused anyone to have a rash, and I'm glad I did! I have been broken out with a rash on my torso, and right thigh for over a month! I didn't want to say it was the Tide, because no one else in my family has had an outbreak of any kind. But I'd rather it be me than them. I will suggest this to my Dr, since we have ruled out everything else for the past month. Now I'm switching detergents and maybe we can get down to the bottom of this thing! Thanks Everyone!

    1. I washed my bed clothes using a new box of Tide pods. I more than broke out in a rash I barely made it to the ER before my airways completely closed. Hives and rash broke out over much of my body which started on the back of my neck where I laid my head on a pillow.
I was on a ventilator and feeding tube for three days in ICU.
The experience was terrible and horrifying so now to be on the safe side I carry an epee-pen.

I've since learned of several cases with the exact symptoms, there as to be a common thread so if this happened in any way to you including rashes email me at mwilliams@moransart.com

  8. Yes I have hives on my upper arms, now on my forearms, also my shorts. Pretty much anywhere clothing touched. Life's getting pretty itchy luckly appointment tomorrow. Also my son had a few but by then I figured out the pods were the only change in life so I changed detergent back to Tide cold for the family. But I might have to change completely as my rash is getting worse even with a complete rewash with Tide cold.

  9. I never would have thought it could be the detergent. I switched over to PODS before going on vacation and so i had clothes washed with PODS and those using my older detergent. Oh my god for almost 3 months i have been getting hives and rashes on my neck, legs and arms. At Night I would scratch like crazy.

I will definitely switch back now.

  10. I had to go the ER with a severe rash that extended over 80% of my body. The redness, swelling, itching and pain were unbearable. I use Tide regular for years with no problems. But this has now caused me to be Tide free for life:( I am just now washing all my clothes in fresh plain water and stripping the bed also. I hope this helps!

  12. I also broke out from the tide pods. I thought I had caught something or had got it poison oak or something and went to the dr because my itchiNg was unbearable. I couldn't sleep or anything for days. After getting antibiotic biopsy of the rash steroids and double steroid shot I was still itching. Then I thought well tide pods is all I've changed. I am rewashing my stuff And finally healing. Not sure if it's gonna scar yet because my skin is bad... :(

  13. Bought the pods for my daughter for college, because it seemed so convenient. She is now wondering if that could be what is making her face break out so badly, since she never had a problem before. She's going back to the powder to see if that helps, and double rinsing.

  14. My whole family is itching and scratching so much we are scanning up! Only change has been tide pods! I'm hoping since I've started rewashing stuff it will go away. Hard to function on little to no sleep!!! Sucks to pay for something that costs so much, and it makes you miserable!!!!!

  17. Regular office-worker male here - just switched to the Pods, after a few days developed a rash in a very "sensitive" area. Quickly washed myself and switched to some older undergarments I knew hadn't been washed with the Pods yet and the problem started improving within the hour. Two days later and I just have a bit of fading redness left. No other skin issues, but it may have been just concentrated/not thoroughly rinsed in this particular garment, or perhaps prolonged contact on sensitive areas is what did it. Going back to power/liquid tonight...

  19. I thought my cats had fleas or something, because I was getting small bumps and they were so itchy I was scratching to the point of breaking the skin.
Gave the cats a flea bath (not fun)even though they weren't showing signs of having them. The itchiness still didn't go away.
I then mentioned this to a co-worker and that I had switched to the pods and she told me her whole family had broken out in rashes after she used them.
The rest of my pods are going in the garbage and I'm going to have switch back to powder (not Tide) and rewash everything.

  20. I switched to the Tide pods after many years of regular Tide use. Well it was horrible!! My son started complaining he didnt feel good. The next day he had a headache, and the following day also. So I started the process of figuring out what was making him have heachaches. I only changed to the Tide pods. So I cleaned all the cloths in hot water and vinagar and OMG the film that sat on top the of the water was sickening! NEVER will I ever use Tide Pods again!! After a good shower and toweled off with a clean Tide Free towel and Clean cloths the headache was gone! So dont think it might just be a cold... Thank goodness I figured it out and recleaned everything ( sheets, cloths, towels,etc..) with vinagar to remove the residue. Glad my son isnt young cause who knows how it would have turned out other wise.

  21. I had a feeling it was the Tide Pods and now I'm sure after reading these comments. My whole family has been itching for a few weeks and it gets real bad at night. My son has been wearing gloves all the time and i din;t think much of it. Well yesterday we went to the doctor to get his shots and the doctor wanted to check his blood presure but he wouldn't take off the gloves or his jacket. e started to cry and said he had a problem and when the gloves came off, OMG he had a rash,& scales and it looked like Zombie hands. He had the rash all over his body but was too afraid to tell anyone. I felt so bad. Doctor said it is Eczema and gave him medicine. He has to stay home from school for a week to heal. These pods are bad news !! Too bad we can't get a refund as expensive as they are.

  22. Please don't use pods, I have never been in so much discomfort, the itching made me scream, and the steroid treatment was just as bad, but it cleared it up, there should be a law suit

  23. Everyone in my family has broken out in a miserable rash. When it first started we stripped all the bedding abs washed everything in hot water with Tide Pods. We have pets in the house abs thought they may be the cause of the rash. The rash only got worse. We change our sheets nightly, the rash gets worse. So I googled Tide Pod and Rash. I believe I finally have my answer. I am doing a basket clean on my washer right now. Then I wm washing everything with anything but pods!!! I am so so glad to know I am not crazy.

  24. My mother discovered I was allergic to regular Tide in 1970. I re-discovered it in 1992. You couldn't pay me to try Tide pods. Even my dermatologist recommended not using Tide. The only detergent I have found to clean well and not give me a rash is Gain.

  25. I've been using Tide pods since they came out with no issue for the first several months then all of a sudden I was itchy EVERYWHERE and started to develop large pimple/chickenpox looking bumps on my back. I tried everything - perscription meds, topical creams, change of diet, started using Aveno baby wash for a soap, etc. nothing helped. Finally, when I changed laundry detergents from Tide Pods to ABC Free (no fragrance or dye) I have started to have a little relief. The bumps are gone and the itching has decreased by 90% - and it's only been a couple of days! What sucks is having to wash everything I own (dirty or not) all over again. I live in a pay laundry building so it's pricey.

  26. Just had the same reaction to Tide Pods being described -- hives on parts of body that made contact with clothing washed in it. Never had any skin reaction to regular Tide, or anything else. Call Proctor & Gamble and file a complaint. They will ask you to send back the pods you have left, and will also send you a coupon for regular tide to make up for the pods you will not use.

  29. 3 months.... of living hell. Yep thats what Tide Pods did to me. I've spent sleepless itchy nights crying and searching the internet for information. The thing was, I didn't ever think it was the pods, never even considered it. Why would I? I'd been using Tide for years. I was convinced our house was infested with some kind of bird or rat mite that was only attacking me. My husband, friends, kids, family physician, dermatologist, exterminator all thought I was NUTS! Even with a visable rash,,,, no one wanted to hear it. Dr.s chalked it up as being something I brought back from overseas. Cleaned non stop for months, washing everything in the house with Tide Pods then bagging everthing or putting it in tubs. Vacuming whole house daily, even the ceiling. Tea tree baths, bleach baths, clove baths, OFF, borax everywhere. Washed bed linens every nite and I personally only would wear clothes straight from a hot dryer. It got so bad.... I cut my mattress open.... but I knew it wasnt bed bugs... I just wanted to be sure. I was calling friends trying to find anyone with a microscope. I just had to know what followed me around nonstop eating me.

Then one night a few weeks ago. I was laying in my nice clean bed, ikea spatchula in hand, scratching like a freak, I reached over, picked up the tablet and googled Tide Pods itchy. BAM!!! End of story, bought generic baby laundry soap the next day..... I havent itched since.
Good news is.... Proctor and Gamble know somethings up, or they wouldn't of sent me coupons for 2- free 64 use any kind of tide.
So please complain..... I have no idea what they are putting in those PODs, but it can't be healthy for anyone.
I'm just happy this nitemare finally ended.

  30. I'm curious as to if anyone else is allergic to animal dander? Thats the only thing besides the tide pods that has ever caused an allergic reaction with me. I am thinking that maybe there are traces of animal dander in whatever they make the gelatin pods from. Is this to far fetched? Some gelatins have PIG SKIN and Horse Hooves. Maybe I'm reading to much into this, but I am just curious as to what the heck they are using to cause certain people to have such a bad reaction.

  31. My nephew, who is 5, has been having a severe allergic reaction to something and i asked my sister have u changed laundry soap. She did. Tide pods. Then we remembered he had a reaction at thanksgiving in ohio. At the time we thought it was bed bugs from someones house but then she remembered using tide pods to was his clothes at our brothers. He has had severe rashes and swollen joints and trip to er. I bought him new clothes that he wore and rash went away. Then he wore pants my sisrer rewashed in all free and clear but he still broke out again severly. I told here she had to do everything in hot water and vinegar to get out all that soap. If that doesnt work new clothes then. That wont be cheap. Tide needs to pull these things from the shelf! I only use an all natural soap made from coconuts and magnolia that i get from costco. No problems when they lived with me.

  32. My feet started itching UNBEARABLY awhile back. Nothing would help but a good dose of Benadryl. I would itch so badly that my feet would start to bleed and scab up. I have also been having headaches almost continuously. Nothing has changed except that I bought a front loader, high efficiency washer/dryer set, and bought Tide pods, thinking they would be so convenient. NEVER AGAIN! Husband suggested it could be pods; I have noticed that I can be fine (except slightly headachey, I guess from the actual washed clothing that I have on) until I pick up a pod and throw in washer. Within minutes my feet will be itching like crazy. Will call P&G and see if they will send me a coupon for something else.

  33. I am SO glad to have found this blog!! Without a skin test my new physician assistant told me I had scabies! Whaaat?! But my symptoms didn't match a scabies infestation. I even took both cats to the vet today $$ and they don't have fleas or mites or scabies. My other family members itch under clothing & no sign of scabies. Tide Pods are the only common denominator in all of our itching!! I've used regular tide for years with no problem - so they've just lost a regular customer!! Thanks everyone! !!!!!!

  37. I am so happy I found this blog! I too have had a terrible experience after using Tide PODS. After one week of using Tide PODS, my daughter had a mild skin irritation, but within two weeks, I had a severe allergic reaction which started with a skin rash on my thighs and upper arms. The chicken pock-like bumps spread to my whole body within 24 hours. My skin felt hot, my blood pressure was high, and I had an extremely bad headache on top of the extremely itchy skin. I knew I needed medical attention and my physician said she hadn't seen anything quite like it. She prescribed prednisone and a couple of other histamine blockers to help me get through the terrible rash that I was experiencing. I will never again use Tide PODS!

  38. Okay I now know I am not the only one suffering. I am in so much pain from the hives and bumps that it is unbelievable. I had an allergic reaction to Tide when I was a baby and have stayed away from Tide ever since.. until recently. Within the last year we have been using Tide Pods and I didn't have any problems until we moved into a new house several weeks ago. It started in my armpits and spread down my arms and up my neck and to my stomach. I just don't know why all of a sudden the Pods would affect me when before I didn't have a problem... BUT MY REAL QUESTION IS WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR RELIEF WHEN YOU ARE WAITING FOR THE HIVES TO GO AWAY??? I can't even put Vaseline on my skin because even that hurts. I have been on Prednisone and even went back and got a shot because nothing seemed to be helping. I WOULD APPRECIATE SUGGESTIONS!!! THANKS.

  39. I broke out in an itchy, burning rash in my sensitive region. I thought it was a yeast infection and after using over the counter treatments, it got worse and spread to my inner thighs. I went to the doctor and did the lab testing which came back negative for yeast. I told her I had switched to Tide pods about 2 weeks ago (when I started to get itchy) and we figured it was that. I am now taking steroids, pills and applying cream twice a day. I am also wearing clothing that was not washed in the Tide Pods and the irritation is minimal.

  41. I have been losing my mind, particularly at night, with the itching. Seems the worst on my extremities and at night. There have been nights that I have wanted to rip my hands or feet off my body it is so bad, sometimes scratching until I bleed. I have spent countless hours racking my brain and doing Internet searches trying to figure out what could be wrong. I don't think there is anything, from bed bugs to scabies, that didn't cross my mind. For some reason just now tonight it occurred to me that the itching probably began around the time I began using the Pods. I guess it just never crossed my mind because I've alwAys used Tide without incident. So tomorrow begins the mass washing of EVERYTHING. Fingers crossed...

  44. The itching rash on chest, stomach, back and thighs, has been pure torment. Face and lips were swollen and eyes swollen completely shut. After a trip to the doctor, steroid shots plus antihistamines, I can now open my eyes but still extremely swollen and the skin around my eyes, eyelids and below my eyes are dry and scaly. The skin is sagging and has a bruised appearance. My skin was so sensitive to touch, that it was painful for the water to touch it when I got in the shower. Today, three days after the steroid shots, went back to the doctor and he prescribed oral prednisone and more antihistamines. In desperation, I began searching on the internet for answers and found that many people experienced some or all of these symptoms after starting to use the Tide Pods. I started using them about a week ago. I am in the process now of re-washing clothes and linens, and praying for relief. Will follow up with results.

  46. Yes, Itching everywhere my clothes and sheets touched me! Took me 4 weeks and a doctors visit to figure this out, but not from the doctor. He tested me for STDs, liver damage, allergy test, and others. I put two and two together when the itching got so bad that I took my clothes off and spent several hours isolated in my house. That is when I notice that my symptoms got little better. I put my clothes back on and the symptoms got worse. I never broke out in a rash except in my arm pits. Everywhere else it would just itch with no rash or hives. I washed all my sheets several times with another brand and... last night I slept with no itching for the first time in 4 weeks. Tide pods has something new in them because I have used them since they first came out. Wondering if it is that 1,4 dioxane they had in them that was above limits? http://ens-newswire.com/2013/01/25/procter-gamble-must-scrub-carcinogen-dioxane-from-tide/

The next morning my eye was swollen shut and i had a rash on my legs, arms and stomach. I started thinking if I had used anything new or eaten something I was allergic to. I googled rash with Tide Pods, and I got my answer. Washing everything and going back to Costco pods. It must be the perfume in the pod that causes the rash.

  53. The scent from Tide Pods gives me an instant headache. It is a very distinct smell. Five minutes of exposure from 5 feet away on a coworker is enough to cause a headache. I asked my allergy doctor about reactions to smells--he said they are neurochemical and there is nothing I can take to prevent it. Avoidance of the chemical is the only way--that is difficult when strangers and coworkers are releasing vapors from the clothing. The chemicals emitted by Tide Pods are noxious and harmful to me--I think they should be banned.

  54. I had hives on my legs, arms, neck and chest. Because I always used tide, I thought it was because it was winter. So I used body oil, creams, and changed my body soap. I still inched so bad, I was using a hair brush to scratch with! The only change I hadn't tried was the PODS. So I went back to the regular tide, and itching has stopped.

  55. You need to avoid detergents all together, invest in a detergent free cleaning system that connects to your washing machine. Commercial versions have often been used by hospitals to protect their patients from detergent allergies, and are now available for residential use as well! The added benefit of a detergent free system is that they don’t use hot water which makes them energy-efficient, potentially saving money on electricity bills while protecting your skin. For more information on how you could permanently stop using all detergents go to: www.astralaundry.com

  57. I'd been itching like crazy for almost a year... rashes, bumps and sort of prickly pimple things that started on my lower legs the progressed higher and then to my back and sides of my stomach.
I had seen my doctor who had prescribed betaderm then to a dermatologist that prescribed lyderm and bleach baths...Nothing seemed to help.
Thankfully with the aid of Google I found this page. I've switched from the tide pods I was using and started using other products (Purex and Sunlight thus far) and I'm happy to report that after 2 months I can truthfully say the rashes have stopped and I'm beginning to heal. I'd also washed all my clothes and bedding three or more times to try to remove anything.
I am older so the scars this rash has left me will likely be with me the rest of my years.

  58. I wish I would have researched Tide pods sooner. I recently changed to the pods from the Tide liq. detergent. I too have been itching like crazy with rashes, bumps and sort of prickly pimples - I though it was bed bugs, mosquito bites, etc. -after reading these reviews, I will no longer use the pods and will return the unused pods to Costco. 1. Update Feb 27, 2015, - it took several months for everything to clear-up; itching, rashes,, and scaring. I had to clean sofa coverings and washed everywhere I sat my bottom, including my car seats... I will never use tide products again. I am now using non-chemical detergent for laundry...

  59. Ditto! After getting hives, which I'd never had before, I asked my girlfriend if she possibly changed laundry detergent recently. She said yes, to pods. A little googling later and here I am. Thanks to all for the help.

  61. I did some research tonight and stumbled across this post on the first page of Google's results. Twice now, I've developed a rash. The first time, it went away. This time, I've not been so fortunate. :( So what could the cause be? One of two things. A new dog (doubtful) or these pods. I'm switching back to Tide liquid ASAP and hope the rash and itchies will disappear. Ugh. This is no fun.

  62. I recently switched from the liquid tide to the tide pods and for the first few washing everything was ok, but my son developed a really bad allergic reaction all over his bottom and his legs. At first I thought it was caused my his body was so I threw it away but his rash kept getting worse I tired to think of everything from bed bugs etc...just this past week he became so sick from the rash that I ended up taking him the children's hospital here. The doctor didn't have a clue, she didn't even ask if I changed anything lately. So I ended up at the pharmacy to get stuff to help my little guy and she asked if I recently changed laundry soap, or bath soap I mentioned I recently switched to tide pods and she said they are not very good for kids and even the tide pods for sensitive skin are no good and are not actually not good either, I was in shock so she told me to switch back to liquid tide and gave me stuff to help heal him and help him feel better

  64. After my reaction in 2012 and early 2013 to Tide Pods.... I now am reacting to many things. In my mind... Something in these pods messed my immune system up. I can't prove it, I just know.

  65. I figured it out this morning.... after a month of living Hell. Class action lawsuit would bring it out in the open and save all those who haven't figured it out or read things like this. I pity them.

  66. I could tell how I mitigate itch... but no one has ever listened. Without it, through years of intolerable itching of poison ivy throughout my childhood, I may have taken my life to escape the insanity if I hadn't discovered how to relieve the horror. Encased in the overwhelming suit of itching in school, I knew that I could relieve it once I got home. It got me through those years and I survived. When I left the rural area and went out into the world I stayed away from poison ivy and lived for decades itch free. Until this past month when that monster, Tide Pods, came into my life and has once again created a living hell. The means I now use is different to relieve the itch, but the result is the same... immediate relief, for a while, even hours. In short, the relief is from intense heat to the afflicted area. Heat close to burning, pulled away by instinct to protect cellular destruction of the skin. As a child I stood in front of a fireplace. Later I used water from the Hot tap of a faucet. Today the tool, the means I use to set me free of the intolerable unspeakable itch... is a heat gun. Hot air. Your body won't let you actually burn yourself, although it will feel that way when the heat is enough to banish the itching, but your body won't let you do that. It takes a NEED to escape itching to get through the pain of the hotness, but once the threshold of heat pain jerks the arm with the heat gun away, or removes the flesh from the faucet, or from the heat of a fire... at that instant the itch is GONE. Good luck.

  67. I have been using Tide Pods for months... no problem until I bought the Tide Pods with stain remover and color protection. OMG!!! I hope this is the problem, because I have been in misery for the last three weeks. Especially in bed, under the sheets - my whole body itches and burns intensely! I have a rash that started on my jawline and cheeks (right where the sheets touch when I'm sleeping), then my legs started itching and burning intensely - now my whole body is doing the same. It wasn't immediate, but once it starts it spreads. Quitting all tide products and anything that has little "extras" in it. So glad I found this blog!

  68. Bought tide 4 in 1 pods to take on vacation beings they would pack easy. Got home continued using them to wash all our clothes from vacation and after. 3 days later I am dying with a rash and itch so bad. I realized that’s the only thing I have changed. I rewashec all the clothes I had previously washed with the pods. I’m wearing clothes that weren’t washed with the pods since yesterday. My itching and rash are still very bad and annoying, hopefully it clears up soon. It’s 5 days now.

  70. I switched to tide pods about 3 weeks ago. I was having constant headaches and joint pain fir two weeks. I convinced myself I had Covid-19, got tested and it was negative. 5 days ago, I broke out in hives all over my body. My skin has been burning hot and sooo itchy. Went to urgent care and have just been taking Benadryl ever since. Even as I write this...it is 2AM and I cant sleep because Im covered in hives. Ive now rewashed my sheets, blankets and recently worn clothes 3 times in liquid detergent and I am still itching :( I wish I never used Tide Pods. This has caused me so much stress (thinking I had Covid and waiting a week for the results), prevented me from sleeping from the extreme itching, and a fortune in detergent trying to wash my clothes over and over. I am sorry for all of you out there feeling the same pain (and itch)!

  71. Glad I stumbled upon this blog and comments section. For two weeks I have had terrible rashes and itchiness all over. The last thing my wife and I did was switch to tide pods. The determintologist prescribed some oral medicine that is helping with the inflammation but we are now re-washing everything with powder. Hopefully it is the tide pods.

  72. How does Procter and Gamble allowed to continue to sell a product that causes so much death and misery. My wife and I have finally figured out after two weeks of suffering that our recent use of "Spring Meadows" tide pods were the source of our suffering. Tragic that they are allowed to get away with this.

  73. Same thing here. I've been itching like crazy, especially at night in bed. Last night it dawned on me. This had only really begun a few months ago when we installed a new washing machine that was designed to use pods. The GE washing machine came with a free sample of Tide Pods. We bought a large container of the Tide pods. The smell from the washing machine pervaded the entire house with an artificial and overpowering scent. That smell has remained on our clothes and is clearly derived from an extremely potent cocktail of chemicals.

Having stumbled on so many accounts of similar itchiness and rashes we pulled all our sheets off the bed and tossed them in the washing machine without any detergent (double rinse cycle). We will do the same with our clothes. Needless to say the remaining pods are in the trash bin.
