10 Things I've Memorized

These days, I have trouble remembering what day it is. If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, you may have noticed my hashtag/explanation for this: #mombie. I guess it's partly hormonal, but mostly just sleep deprivation. Maybe a little to do with the fact that I have two small people & all the associated things that I need to take care of/worry about that is just taking up more space in my brain.

Good thing I memorized this, after what baby Linnaeus did to it.
Another factor in the memory issues might just be my smartphone. I don't need to remember much because I have alarms & reminders & notifications set to tell me to do nearly everything. I have apps that remind me of things like which side I last breastfed on, or what I'm supposed to buy at the grocery store. Then there's Wikipedia: who needs to remember the name of the first Prime Minster (or any prime minister, really) when you can just search for it & have the answer in seconds?

Despite my short-term memory issues of late, plus my heavy smartphone usage, I realized that I still have a lot of things memorized. Phone numbers, addresses, passwords, codes, how to spell things, weird French verb conjugations... Here are the first ten that come to mind:

  1. My phone numbers (yes, I still have a landline as well as a mobile).
  2. My husband's mobile number.
  3. The names of the Seven Dwarves. Sleepy, Happy, Grumpy, Dopey, Sneezy, Bashful, Doc.
  4. My debit card number.
  5. My passwords for so. Many. Things.
  6. The poem "In Flanders Fields", which I learned in grade five for a Remembrance Day ceremony. This was the first poem I ever memorized. "In Flanders fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row..."
  7. My phone number from when I was 11. Three phone numbers ago. It was 898-5843.
  8. My postal code from when I was 11. Can't remember any of the NINE postal codes I've had since then except the current one. It's not that this time in my life was particularly good or memorable, it was just easy to remember because it spelled something: V0N 1T0.
  9. The words to the song I sing most often: Hush Little Baby. It's one of the songs I started singing to Linnaeus when he was a baby, the only one I still sing him & his sister.
  10. My library card number. Fourteen digits, it's the number I use most often for putting books on hold at the library, taking out ebooks & checking how high the fines are that I've racked up.

Oddly, most of the things I've memorized are numbers. What about you? What have you memorized?

    1. I ALWAYS forget something I wanted to get at the grocery store unless I write it down (well, type it into my phone). Memorizing just doesn't work for a grocery list for me... Thanks for coming by!

  3. Funny how we remember so many things from long ago. I bet I would be close to knowing my debit cRd number since I do all my shopping online. But I don't know the four digit PIN number for it :)

    1. I've never used my debit card online--my Visa & Paypal all the time, but never debit. I use it nearly exclusively when shopping 'in real life' though. Cash, a lot less often. Thanks for visiting!

  4. OMG....love it, I remember my parents old phone number too...and we also have a landline. With a few outages each year we NEED a land line. I need to remember my library card number, I use it all the time.

    1. I don't think I ever tried to memorize my library card number, but I use it so much that it just happened. Also, it's been the same for literally decades--I got this card while I was still in high school. The address of the library has changed & the cards look totally different now. I haven't replaced it because it's just so hilariously trashed. I wonder how long it will last?
