Any day now

Okay, yesterday I officially hit the point where I am tired of being pregnant. I have actually enjoyed a lot of it for the last 39 weeks, but now I'm done. I'm tired of hauling the extra 34 pounds around on sore feet & hips. I can't wait until I can roll over in bed without feeling like I've got a sack of flour tied to my belly. I want to go more than an hour without having to pee.

I'm doing a few things to hasten this baby's arrival: taking evening primrose oil, drinking red raspberry leaf tea, trying to walk as much as I have the energy for & the old classic, (as Aleks, our prenatal class teacher says) "You loved this baby in there, now you gotta love him out".

I'm also starting to worry about going overdue far enough that I'll be induced. I really don't want the crazy super-contractions that come with a pitocin drip, or the potential for a cascade of interventions that might end up coming along with it. I'm trying to decide if I want the midwife to sweep my membranes at my next appointment on Wednesday. That might hurry this baby up a little, if my body's ready for it. However, after reading way too many postings in online message boards about women's experiences with having a membrane sweep, I'm more confused than ever. I'm kind of hoping that Sprout will just come this week so I don't even have to decide...

  1. I had a stretch and sweep when I was a week overdue. Didn't hurt. Went into labour 36 hours later, but not actually sure if the two were related (sweep wasn't very successful).

Personally, I wasn't comfortable doing it any earlier, given that the average first pregnancy lasts 40 weeks 6 days.

And yes, the last two weeks of my pregnancy were pretty miserable. Big hugs to you! I know that you can do this, and Sprout will definitely arrive before you're 42 weeks.

  2. Aww... thanks Katie! I appreciate the feedback. I was thinking of just waiting a bit to do the sweep.

As long as the weather stays cool & I've got something to do all day, I think I can hold out...

  3. I've heard having your membranes stripped is quite painful though..and doesn't always work. A friend of mine had it done 3 times, and it didn't do anything.

I've also heard spicy food can kickstart labour? Don't try the castor oil route...not so fun!

The last month was always miserable for me, I just wanted to be done. To be able to do things like tie my shoes again...roll over, cut my toenails, lie down without heartburn..you know!

I'll be crossing my fingers Sprout decides to come out soon, and you have a quick labour.

  4. Heard about the spicy food thing, yes. I had tandoori chicken & banana pepper pizza Friday night. Been eating lots of salsa too lately.

I was able to tie up my own shoes today & I did my toenails last night on my own too, so I can't complain that much...

  5. How does that work that you are more mobile than I was, but gained about the same weight?? ;pp I was a big blimp, you just look like you are carrying a volleyball under your shirt!
