Glam: 2013 Top 30 Vancouver Mom Blogger Celebration

Last year I was nominated as one of Vancouver's Top Bloggers in VancouverMom's annual contest. I biked to the 2012 celebration at the Museum of Vancouver, where I got to see the exhibits, have some wine & appies. I got some amazing swag--tons of Nature's Path products, freebies from lots of sponsors, plus there were makeup & nail artists at the event. One of the most useful things: I received a great headshot by Images By Bethany.

I was flattered to be on the Top 30 list, & excited to get to go to the event, but I had no idea how it would really change things for me.

Besides getting more attention for The Sprog--meaning tons of interesting opportunities to review things, attend great events--I met the other moms in the top 30. We didn't all talk at the big event, though I met some of them & chatted a little. A little later, we started a Facebook group for just the 30 of us, which grew into something amazing. Our blogs are pretty different, from fashion to reviews & giveaways to photography to you-name-it, but we all have the common bond of being moms & bloggers. We started sharing tips, opportunities, collaborating on things like blog trains & chatted. A lot.

I can't remember how many times we've organized get-togethers in person. Despite being busy moms from all over the Lower Mainland, we manage to see each other in real life once in a while. I've come to think of this diverse network of other mom bloggers as friends & really value their advice & support.

This year's Top 30 Blogger Celebration

This year's Vancouver Mom Top Blogger contest is upon us: dozens of bloggers were nominated & the top 30 have been shortlisted already. You can read about them here, on VancouverMom's site, starting on May 20: 1-6, 7-12, 13-18, 19-24, 25-30.

May 27-June 7, 2013, voting opens for the top overall amazing Vancouver mom blogger. Vote for your favourite among the top 30. The big winner will be revealed on June 19, 2013, when we’ll celebrate the 2013 Top 30 Vancouver Mom Bloggers.

Last year's event was great fun, a fabulous way to network & meet other people: other bloggers, PR people, brands looking to connect. This year's event promises to be incredible too.

The even will be at Secret Location, "one part lifestyle boutique, one part restaurant." Secret Location is a concept store that offers deliciously fresh design and cuisine in the heart of Gastown. Tickets include light appetizers and a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage. Cash bar is also available. Tickets are $$ until May 31, then $ until the event.

BC Home & Garden Show Giveaway

You may have heard me moaning about the state of my 1946 bungalow before, but if not, let me tell you it's in dire need of renovations. Our kitchen was expanded into an addition in about 1959 (we think) & the bathroom was straight out of 1981 until we replaced the mirrors, sink & vanity. I won't get into what I hate about the rest of the place, because it's a long list.

Redoing our kitchen is definitely on my radar this year, so I was pretty excited to get the chance to go to the BC Home + Garden Show for free. I'll be looking for inspiration on what to do with our barely functional kitchen.

I know you're thrilled that I got free tickets, but... what's in it for you? I've got another set of FOUR tickets to give away to one of you! Before I get into the details of the contest, let me give you a taste of what's going on at the BC Home + Garden Show.
The BC Home + Garden Show is five days of insight & inspiration for making every house a home, featuring HGTV stars like Bryan Baeumler of Leave It To Bryan, Paul Lafrance from Decked Out & Vancouver’s own Philip DuMoulin & Sarah Daniels of Urban Suburban, 425 retailers and a full line-up of new features, all under one roof.

If you're free on Thursday, February 21 from 12-5pm, don't miss Family Day presented by
Dominion Lending Centres. Family-friendly fare is the focus at the BC Home + Garden Show’s first annual Family Day. faceaballoonza! & VancouverMom.ca will be on-hand to offer up face painting and easy art projects, while moms & dads alike can glean ideas for everything from cooking & gardening with the kiddies to family-friendly design & the latest children’s fashion trends. Scheduled presentations include:
HGTV Main Stage
• Spring Fun 4 Kids Fashion Show, presented by Park Royal
• Interior decorator Christine Friend, Family Friendly Design
• Sewing expert Denise Wild, Decorating with Fabric: Family Edition
Home Cooking Stage
• Chef Ned Bell (& son Max), Cooking Fun with Your Little Ones
• Growing Chefs, Healthy Kids in the Kitchen
• The World in a Garden, Eat More Kale!
Vancouver Sun Gardeners School
• Gardening expert Steve Whysall, Gardening for Kids

This year's BC Home + Garden Show features opening night beer tastings for women only on Wednesday, February 20, 4pm – 9pm; HGTV’s Deck Wars live on Saturday, February 23 at 4 pm; Beers & bites Lounge where you can sample a cold brew (or two) specially selected by Just Here for the Beer and street-food fare like bacon-wrapped hot dogs & real Canadian poutine; not to mention more than 7,000 square feet of gardening inspiration. There's so much great stuff to do, see, learn & eat that I really can't fit it all into one blog post. You'll have to head over to their website for the schedule & more information about everything that's going on.
Okay, now that I've told you a little more about the show, here's how you can win FOUR tickets (that's worth $60) to see it for free. The only catch is that you have to be here in Vancouver during the show to collect your prize. You can 'earn' multiple entries by doing the following in the Rafflecopter widget below:
    1. leave a comment on the blog here about why you want to go to the BC Home + Garden Show
    2. tweet about this contest (you can do this DAILY for extra entries!)
    3. share the contest on Facebook (you can do this DAILY for extra entries!)
Don't forget to tell Rafflecopter that you've done the above option(s) after you post/tweet/share so that it'll be counted & valid for when the random number generator does its work. :) Also--if you have any issues, please let me know! I'll close the contest on February 12 at 9pm & notify the winner by email. If s/he doesn't respond within 48 hours, I'll have to choose another one. Good luck everyone!

    Monday Listicles: 2012 in Tweets

After a short hiatus from Listicling--that's a verb, right?--I'm back! I just couldn't stay away from the lists after doing it weekly for over a year now. This week The Great Stasha had three options for us to choose from:
    or

For me, it was down to a choice between 80s or ten tweets. As we're in the very last hours of 2012, I decided to choose ten of my tweets that sort of summed up the year. Using All My Tweets, I pored through nearly 2200 tweets from 2012 to find the best ones. Narrowing it down to ten was near impossible--sorry--so I present to you my list of 14:

I spent hours & hours commuting to university by bus last spring, while finishing off a speech sciences certificate. I do actually like taking the bus most of the time. Sitting  there reading, tweeting or playing games on my phone sure beats paying attention to traffic, finding a parking space & all the other crap that comes with driving. But seriously, could all the MP3 player users of the world just get better headphones so I don't have to hear your shite music?!?

First bike ride of many this past year!

Unless forced to get up in wee hours of the morning (I consider any hours 'wee' if they're single-digit) for work or something, my schedule slowly shifts to semi-nocturnal.

I finally got back into performing on stilts after a lengthy hiatus due to belly-full-of-baby, etc. Happily, my first few gigs involved roomier dresses. For this gig however, I needed to wear my clown costume: pants. Not long before my screen test, I confirmed that, sadly, my pre-baby bum was slightly smaller than my post-baby bum. Being a metre taller than your average gal brings with it some wardrobe difficulties, I can tell you. Nothing the addition of a bit of fabric in the back seam couldn't fix!

Getting picked to help promote the Vancouver International Children's Festival via social media was awesome. I loved helping get the word out about Kidsfest & getting to go for free (not to mention some of the preview events & soirees) was really just the cherry on top. If you want to see photos of what fun Kidsfest is in Vancouver, check out my posts on our first day at Kidsfest & Kidsfest: Day Two. This event is definitely a highlight of the year for us & I can't wait to go again in 2013!

Thanks to some of you (I assume), I was nominated as one of the Top 30 Vancouver Mom blogs. Winning a spot in the top 30 came with a lot of perks, like getting to go to the big soiree for free, not to mention prizes & a fair bit more attention for The Sprog. An unexpected & far better benefit was the camaraderie that developed among the other top 30 bloggers. We've kept in touch via Facebook & had several get-togethers in person. I've learned a lot about blogging from this group of women.

We took Sprout to three of Vancouver's outdoor movies this summer: The Princess Bride, Monty Python & The Holy Grail, then Labyrinth. He loved them--well, the first & the last one, anyway. Riding along the Seawall on a mild summer evening, bike valet parking, popcorn, blankets & a movie on a giant inflatable screen--all FREE: what's not to like?

I got a stilting gig as background in a Huggies commercial (this is what I did the aforementioned screen test for). I was part of a circus troupe featuring acrobats on trampolines, stilt walkers, fire breathers, unicyclist, horse riders & the fabulous East Van institution that is the Carnival Band. Doing extra work for TV or movies generally ends up being a whole lot of "Hurry up & wait!", aka, boooo-rrrringgg. However, hanging out with about  two dozen circus performers for two days straight? So much fun! Oh, & if you want to actually see the Huggies commercial, it's here on YouTube. You can see me in the background for a second or two--look for red pants, black jacket & yellow shirt.

This road trip featured a subcompact car, hours of my father-in-law driving us around, temperatures over 40 celsius & a skin infection requiring two separate prescriptions each for Oli & Sprout. Not one of my favourite trips, I have to admit. I'm hoping that we'll be able to do some slightly more successful travelling with Sprout this coming year.

Over the last summer we spent a few afternoons trying to track down bourbon caramel bacon brownies from our friends' bacon-based food cart, Pig on the Street. When we found out that they would be participating in a weekly gathering of some of the best food carts in the city at the Waldorf Hotel, we were justifiably stoked. This is also the event where I found (food) love at first sight: pupusas from Guanaco Truck, a Salvadoran food cart.

In the summer I was whining that a kid-friendly cafe needed to open up in my neighbourhood. I wrote a wish list of sorts here in An Open Letter to My Dream Cafe. Four months later, Sweetsalt Bakery appeared & fulfilled nearly every item on my list. I'm still waiting for a place that has good beer AND a play area though. :)

I got the opportunity to go behind the scenes for Vancouver's We Day to video blog for Telus & then sat in a reserved box for the big event. It was pretty cool, though not knowing who most of the musical acts were made me feel a bit old. You can check out my post about We Day if you want to know more. Here's the final cut of the Telus for We Day video I contributed to.

This is better than TV--we look out the living room window & see all kinds of birds eating, flying, doing bird stuff every day. I've even downloaded an app to help me identify which birds are which. (I know, I'm a nerd)

Once I got a phone upgrade (thanks Telus!) & actually had a relatively recent Android operating system that could run it, I joined the dark side: Instagram. It's been, "Sprout! Freeze! Mama needs to Instagram this!" on a daily basis since then. When we had our Vancouver Inspiration Pass (free admission to over a dozen musems, galleries & other attractions in the city) I became a total Instagram-a-holic.

Click the button over there to the left & head on over to NorthWest Mommy's Listicle Linky if you'd like to read more lists like the one above. You can even join in the fun & link up your own list too!

    Busy Week!

This week has been one of the busiest for me in a while. So far: video blogging behind the scenes & at We Day Wednesday & Thursday; a day-long workshop on engaging newcomers in cycling; all the logistics & emails involved in these events plus my bandanna bib giveaway; a schwack of freelance writing; choosing, editing & designing a Blurb photo book; plus probably a few other things I'm forgetting. Oh yeah & a new phone to play with (a Samsung Galaxy SIII, if you must know, courtesy of Telus for video blogging We Day). Whew, that was tiring to just write.

Today: taking Sprout to The Great Big Boo Hallowe'en musical, which I'll be reviewing next week. (Tickets are still available for shows today & tomorrow, by the way) Tomorrow: Food Cart Carnival at the Roundhouse & Raffi's Belugagrads concert!

So, yeah, the posts have been a bit light this week. I'll leave you with a photo (taken with the new toy, er, phone) of a really lovely sandwich I ate recently at SweetSalt Bakery. I'll be writing an article on them for Vancouver Mom--stay tuned for that.

'Alpengluhen': ham & swiss on a Bretzel bun with mixed greens. Really lovely.

Free Baking Class at River Market

Each kid gets to wear an apron!
Last week the sprog & I took the train out to New Westminster to try out a little kids' baking class at the River Market. This was all part of some 'research' I was doing for a Vancouver Mom article on kids programs at the River Market. (Check out my Vancouver Mom article for more on all the other stuff for kids aged 1-12, including summer camps) We arrived early (don't faint--I was surprised too) & Sprout ran around the Food Hall exclaiming at all the 'gwahges' (there are roll-up garage doors on all the businesses) while River Market staff Melissa & Pamola Bakery owner Katia set up for the class.

After donning little aprons, each of the dozen or so children was given a lump of cookie dough to knead & roll out. Then they got to use cookie cutters to create quite a few cookies each. Sprout hasn't really ever been interested in play dough the few times I've offered, but he got into the rolling & cutting.

    Carefully adding sprinkles.
All the cookies were laid out on trays with each child's name written on the parchment. While the cookies baked, Katia & Melissa handed out chocolate cupcakes to decorate. This reminded me instantly of the Stanford marshmallow experiment. A few of them got nibbled while the kids waited for the cream cheese icing to be distributed. Next the kids got to add a few other colours of icing as well as several kinds of sprinkles. Sprout definitely ate more sprinkles than he put on the cupcake.

    Too pretty to eat?
Once the cupcake masterpieces were finished, they got eaten pretty quickly, except for Sprout's. Oddly, he didn't seem at all interested in having any. He finally had a few pieces from the bottom, but didn't eat any of the icing. At that point, all the cookies came out of the oven & we were handed a little bag with Sprout's name on it, full of delicious sugar cookies. I noticed that despite serious variation in the thickness of the cookies rolled out by all the little bakers, none of them seemed to be over- or underdone.

Bag of treats to take home.
The River Market's free kids' baking classes happen at 10-11am every Tuesday in the Food Hall of the River Market.

    A Fabulous night

I'm probably the last of the bunch to post my report on the Vancouver Mom Top Bloggers celebration, but it's not because I didn't have fun. I also don't have any impressive photos to post here, except a couple of really lame ones on my phone camera.* That was quite intentional, actually. Yesterday, when I was deciding what to bring with me (business cards, lip balm, credit card, ID, keys--that's about it!) I thought, "Hey, I should bring my camera." Then I realized what that would mean. I'd be trying to get good photos all night, experiencing the event through the LCD on my camera back.

So I put the camera down & decided not to take photos all night. Which is not to criticize the people there who were taking photos--I'm glad the event was documented. But for me, the night was about meeting people, in real life, without the electronics between us.

Harriet & the 2011 riot window boards.
The evening started off great, with the weather picking up to make for a lovely ride there. It's less than 30 minutes along the Ontario, 10th Ave & Cypress bike routes. I realized a few minutes into my ride that I'd left my front light at home, so I grabbed an MEC Turbo Turtle on my way. (really bright & under $5--awesome little light!) Once I arrived, changed into my fancy shoes on the sidewalk outside (classy, eh?) then washed the bike grime off my fingers I was ready to party!

All the agonizing that we did about what we were going to wear on Twitter in the week leading up to the event seems to have paid off, because everyone looked great. I was one of the few not wearing a dress, my excuse being that I still have bruised knees from my last minor spill off my bike.

Over the evening, I talked to so many new people that I completely lost track of them all. Despite trying hard to match Twitter handles & blog avatars to the faces, or even to remember who said what, I think I missed a few names. It was a lot harder than I expected to recognize people from the tiny little Twitter icons I see all the time. The three (generous) glasses of wine didn't help, either! It was great to meet up with some bloggers I'd only talked to online & see some I'd met in person before.

One of the surprising highlights of the evening was the speeches. Surprising, because--let's be honest--speeches can often be the most boring part of an event. Past Top 30 Bloggers Harriet, Tracey & Amber were given a three minute limit & a topic of What I know now. Their speeches were all very entertaining, but I have to say that it was Harriet who made me laugh hard enough to spill wine.

Yes, it's a plastic golf club.
Later in the evening, after I'd moved on to sparkling mineral water, I checked out the dresses in Art Deco Chic. It's a lovely exhibit for those interested in fashion from the early 20th century. I marvel at the hours that must have gone into the hand embroidery & beadwork on some of the gowns.

By ten pm, the museum staff were gently nudging us out the door, so I strapped my swag basket to my bike, stuffed the other bag of it (yes, I came home with nearly my weight in swag) into my backpack & off I rode.

My head was buzzing when I got home, not just from the wine but the chance to talk with so many new interesting people. I learned a lot & hopefully started a few new friendships. I really needed to go to another blogger meetup like this again soon.

Thanks again to Christine Pilkington of Vancouver Mom for organizing the Top 30 Blogger contest & last night's great event.

*my cycling photos are often lame, as there is always some Scotchlite creating a massive flare in the shot. Sigh.

    Thank you for your support!

Tonight I go to Fabulous, the Vancouver Mom Ultimate Blogger celebration, at the Museum of Vancouver. I get to go for free thanks to making into the top 30--I'm grateful to all of you who nominated The Sprog for the contest. I didn't win the top spot, (that honour went to Melissa of The Thirties Grind) but I'm not upset about that. There are still plenty of prizes for the top 30, but more than that, the contest has connected me with a lot of other bloggers & introduced The Sprog to a wider audience.

That's what I'm most excited about: matching Twitter handles & avatars to faces in real life. I'm looking forward to meeting lots of new people & celebrating all the writing we do. Also, after much discussion on Twitter about what we're all going to wear, I can't wait to see the outfits!

Thank you again for voting for me in the contest!

    Ch-ch-ch-changes...

As you may or may not have noticed, I've made a few small changes around here.

    • A few minor layout shifts & deletions (bonus points if you can tell me what changed)
    • I've been writing articles for Vancouver Mom for about nine months now: if you haven't read any of my articles there, I've got a handy list of links to them. Just click on the tab above ↑ where it says 'My Vancouver Mom Articles'.
    • I've also added a new page of events around the city that we're planning to go to in & around Vancouver. Just click on the 'Events & Fun Stuff' tab on the top left ↑. I've linked to the websites for more information.
Any feedback on the changes? Suggestions are welcome.

    Read me on Vancouver Mom

Just in case you hadn't got enough of me on this blog, you can also read my articles on Vancouver Mom. I'm the Central Contributor, covering my neighbourhood (Cambie, Main & Fraser Streets basically) & writing about three our four articles a month. I write about kid-friendly restaurants, shops that tickle my fancy, outdoor spaces I love, events that are going on in the area... Anything I think other Vancouver mamas might find interesting. If you have a suggestion for something I should write about, please don't hesitate to mention it!

As Christmas is coming, Vancouver Mom has put out an events guide, which I edited for this year. Each Wednesday there will be a list of fun, family-friendly activities going on in the city. The first one is already out! Read it here. I have also written two articles with some tips for maintaining sanity in the holidays & DIYing. Stay tuned for the links on Facebook, plus you can find my past articles here on Sprog Blog's Vancouver Mom page (see the dark grey bar above ↑ or just click here).

UPDATE: If you'd like to download the whole guide as a PDF, including the events listings, my articles & a gift guide, you'll find it here.
